FAQ

Made to Measure Kilts

How are your kilts made?

The majority of my Kilts are made using 8-9 yards of cloth, precisely folded and hand-sewn into pleats using traditional kiltmaking techniques. Each kilt is carefully designed to your exact measure and fully hand-stitched preserving the traditional and endangered craft of Kiltmaking. Finish touches can be tailored to your preference, either traditionally or with a personalised twist.

What is the lead time on a hand-sewn kilt

The lead time depends on your fabric choice as well as my own availability.
I recommend contacting me as early as possible, as a guide I suggest 3 months.
If your tartan choice will delay the process beyond the 3 months I will discuss this with you fully before you commit.

Can I order a kilt to be made ASAP?

If you need a kilt in a hurry I will do what I can for you.
If the tartan is available and have the availability I will bring your order forward for an additional fee. Please note that I take time in creating your kilt to the highest of standards and will not compromise on this.

How much do your kilts cost?

The cost of a kilt depends on many factors including the choice and length of fabric, and on the quality of the of the kilt you are purchasing.
My kilts are hand-stitched and designed uniquely for you. I pride myself in my dedication to precision and attention to detail which is reflected in the cost.
Your fabric and accessories choices will also impact the final quote.
For an 8 yard Kilt prices start at £700, please get in touch to get a quote.

How am I measured for a Kilt?

Ideally you are measured twice during the kiltmaking process.

First measure
When placing an order I will ask for rough measurements to help me build a quote, however a good fit comes from a good measure. If you are local to Edinburgh or are planning on visiting then I can take your measurements in person. If, however, this is not possible I offer either an online video consultation or, if preferred, instructions that can be followed in your own time. You will need someone to help you if you are measuring yourself.

Fitting measure
When the kilt is near completion I will invite you for a fitting. This is the best way to make sure the kilt is exactly as you want it before the finishing touches and final press. This is optional but always recommended.

What is the difference between hand-sewn and hand-finished?

When a kilt is hand-sewn, near every step of the process, from start to finish, is completed by hand. Many hand-sewn kiltmakers prefer to machine-sew the waistband only to allow for easier future alterations, however, all other stitches are carefully crafted by hand to ensure the highest quality and ‘invisible’ stitching.
A hand-finished kilt, on the other hand, usually means that only the final steps — such as adding the lining and straps — are sewn by hand. The majority of the kilt is typically machine-sewn in a factory, which often results in visible machine stitches along the pleats as well as other differences to a fully traditional kilt.
Similarly, a kilt described as ‘hand-finished in Scotland’ may not be fully made in Scotland; it typically refers to the final steps of production being completed here.
Every kilt I create is hand-sewn by myself in Scotland.
